English Language Learners’ educational experiences are often place heavy emphasis on acquisition of verbal and written English skills. While this makes perfect sense of the surface of it, it also makes sense that students aren’t always thrilled to focus on their weakest areas.

With this in mind, we started adapting our program to make it more accessible to ELL students and began offering it during the summer. Fewer adaptations were needed than you might expect as STEM offers its own content language, and the students proved so highly motivated by STEM activities that little explanation was needed for each activity.

As the students progress through the five day program, they also use and acquire English vocabulary and grammar as they go - skills they can use back in school in STEM and other subjects. All in all, it’s a win-win for everyone. The STARBASE ELL program has run every summer since we became operational in the 2012-2013 school year.
